This is a large herbaceous plant with dark green, leathery leaves and a dark purple bract
on a tall spike. It bears small berries that are red when ripe.

PROPERTIES AND USE:
Antispasmodic, analgesic, and treats sprains, aches, rheumatism, arthritis, paralysis, backache, sore muscles, muscle spasms, inflammation, urinary tract infections
For all conditions, boil 3 large leaves in
2 gallons water for 10 minutes. For severe conditions, boil the leaves and place the affected area over the steam. Tent with a blanket, being careful not to burn yourself.
For pain and swelling, make a poultice of mashes leaves. Wear throughout the day. For urinary tract infections, boil a handful of root in 3 cups water for 10 minutes. Sip throughout the day. In Mexico, this decoction is given to ease childbirth pains, and to facilitate healing after childbirth.
